Biden said he spoke with Trump to congratulate him on his victory and pledge a “peaceful and orderly transition” on Jan. 20.

“That’s what the American people deserve,” Biden said.

He also praised Vice President Kamala Harris on her campaign, saying she has a “backbone like a ramrod.”

“She gave her whole heart and effort, she and her entire team should be proud of the campaign she ran,” Biden said.

Biden also emphasized the “historic” nature of his presidency, saying many of the effects of large-scale investment bills will only be felt in the next 10 years.

“We’re leaving behind the strongest economy in the world,” Biden said.

He also noted that his supporters would be disheartened by the outcome, but stressed that “defeat does not mean we are defeated.”

“Setbacks are unavoidable, but giving up is unforgivable,” he said. “We need to stay engaged. We need to keep going. We need to keep the faith.”
