President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will face off on June 27th for the first presidential debate of the 2024 election season.

It’s unclear if there will be an audience and when the debate will begin, though the network said it would be held during “prime time.”

Why is the first debate so early?

This year, both campaigns opted out of participating in the Commission on Presidential Debates due to frustration with the traditional timeline of September and October. This schedule often overlapped with the start of mail-in voting in several states.

Will there be more debates?

Trump has said he wants more than two debates, but no other dates have yet been set.

The Commission on Presidential Debates had originally scheduled to hold the first debate on Sep. 16 at Texas State University, the second on Oct. 1 at Virginia State University, and the third on Oct. 9 at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City.

As of mid-June, whether the Biden or Trump campaign will accept the debate offers remains unclear.
