BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — They say timing is everything, and for Baldwin County Sheriff Hoss Mack, the time for a change is here.

“Through a lot of prayer, family consultation it’s just the right time,” Mack said Monday. “I’m very honored to serve the people of Baldwin County as their sheriff but now I have the opportunity to serve 67 sheriffs in the state of Alabama.”
He started in 1989 as a deputy sheriff and worked his way through the ranks. For the last 17 years, he has been the county’s chief law enforcement officer. He has seen just about everything.
“I’ve lost four of my employees that either died in the line of duty or other causes,” Mack said. “I’ve been through hurricanes, tornados, capital murder cases. The most recent thing we had was the May Day shooting in North Baldwin.”

After retiring later this summer, he will take that experience to the state level. He wants his chief deputy to step in for the rest of his term.
“The highest ranking member of the sheriff’s office becomes the Sheriff until the Governor makes an appointment or doesn’t make an appointment,” Mack said. “So, of course, that is Chief Deputy Anthony Lowery.”
“I have been here almost 18 years, been Chief Deputy for nearly six years,” Col. Anthony Lowery said. “So, I think I’m, you know, stability, continuity all those sort of things. I’m prepared for that.”

Ultimately, it is up to Governor Ivey to make the decision. In the meantime, Mack said the sheriff’s office he leaves behind is the reason he can move on.
“They have put me in the position that I feel like I can offer something to the entire state,” Mack said.
It was a hard decision, an emotional decision but in the end, Mack said it was the right decision.
