Kamala Harris — and to be announced running mate — will campaign in Detroit next week
Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumed Democratic presidential nominee in this November's election, will visit Detroit next week alongside her running mate, her campaign confirmed. Who that is, and when and where exactly Harris will appear in Michigan, was not disclosed Tuesday night.
The visit will be Harris' first to Michigan since President Joe Biden announced July 21 he would not seek reelection this fall, heeding calls from numerous Democrats to step aside for a younger candidate amidst fears he would lose the election to the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump.
The Harris campaign did not indicate the venue or which date Harris, who has not publicly announced a running mate, will appear in Michigan.

Along with the Detroit visit, the campaign said Harris and her future running mate will make a series of stops in key swing states, including Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.
Reuters reported Tuesday that the shortlist for a potential running mate included Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, who lives in Traverse City.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was also initially considered by many to be a contender for Harris' running mate, but has repeatedly said her plan is to remain governor through her second term, which goes through 2026.
Michigan is a crucial swing state in this year's election — as it is most years. It was one of a series of swing states Trump won in 2016 during his first campaign when he won the presidency. President Joe Biden flipped Michigan back to Democrats in 2020, winning by more than 154,000 votes.
Trump most recently visited Michigan on July 20, when he and running mate U.S. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio rallied in Grand Rapids.
Next week also coincides with Michigan's primary election, which is Tuesday, Aug. 6.
Harris is not yet confirmed to be the Democratic nominee, although she's widely expected to earn the party's nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August. Biden, shortly after announcing he wouldn't seek reelection, endorsed Harris' campaign.
Before Biden dropped out, Harris campaigned in southwest Michigan on July 17, marking her most recent visit to the state.
