Kamala Harris Secures Enough Delegates For Democratic Nomination
Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough delegates to grab the Democratic nomination. In the early hours of Tuesday (July 23), VP Harris took to X/Twitter to announce the news. She issued a statement calling attention to “two different clear visions” between herself and former President Donald Trump. VP Harris noted that the choice between the two candidates illustrated a stark difference in policies and perspective, with hers representing a future “that strengthens our democracy.”
“Tonight, I am proud to have secured the broad support needed to become our party’s nominee,” Harris typed. “I look forward to formally accepting the nomination soon. Over the next few months, I’ll be traveling across the country talking to Americans about everything on the line. I fully intend to unite our party and our nation, and defeat Donald Trump.”
Harris’ campaign hit overdrive from the minute President Joe Biden exited the race and endorsed Kamala Harris for the political battle to come. President Biden announced his departure on Sunday (July 21), and the VP picked up the baton on the same day. Since then, Harris has been raking in campaign donations and contributions. Reuters reports that the new campaign raised $81,000,000 million by Monday (July 22), which almost equaled President Biden’s $95,000,000 million that his campaign had in the bank at the time.
In fact, ActBlue, the Democrat fundraising platform, announced on Sunday night (Jul 21), that nearly $50,000,000 had been raised from small donors to fund Harris’ election campaign. “As of 9 PM ET, grassroots supporters have raised $46.7 million through ActBlue following Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign launch,” the organization typed on X. “This has been the biggest fundraising day of the 2024 cycle. Small-dollar donors are fired up and ready to take on this election.”
Following President Biden, more endorsements arrived from her contemporaries. VP Harris would receive endorsements from Maxine Waters, Raphael Warnock, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Andy Beshear, and other celebrities like Shonda Rhimes, Jamie Lee Curtis, Questlove, and more.
This then naturally led to the conversation of Kamala Harris’ potential vice president for the ballot ticket. Reuters reports that a shortlist has been named, revealing popular Democratic hopefuls could appear alongside Harris this fall. These names include Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly.
