Kehlani Reveals Apparent Suicide Attempt

On Monday night, R&B singer Kehlani posted a photo to her since deleted Instagram account, writing that she’d attempted suicide earlier that day but had survived and was now in the hospital.

“Today I wanted to leave this Earth,” she wrote, accompanying a photo of her arm with an IV attached. “Being completely selfish for once. Never thought I’d get to such a low point.”

Though she didn’t connect the two, Kehlani implied the suicide attempt was sparked, at least in part, by massive online backlash she faced after rumors began to spread that she’d cheated on her boyfriend, Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kyrie Irving.

Earlier that day, Drake signee PartyNextDoor posted a photo on Instagram, which has also since been deleted, showing his and Kehlani’s hands in bed together.

“After all her shenanigans, still got the R&B singer back in my bed,” PartyNextDoor wrote.

The backlash was immediate. People were making fun of Irving, who’d apparently been cuckolded, calling PartyNextDoor — real name Jahron Brathwaite — a homewrecker, and I’m sure I don’t need to describe the things people online were calling Kehlani.

But in her post from the hospital, Kehlani clarified that there’d been no affair, that she and Irving had split before she’d gotten back with her ex, PartyNextDoor.

“No one was cheated on and I’m not a bad person,” she wrote. “Everyone is hurt and everyone is in a place of misunderstanding.”

In a subsequent, also deleted, post, Kehlani snapped a shot of PartyNextDoor at her bedside.

“Thank you for saving my life,” she wrote. Kehlani has now deleted all of her social media accounts.

The singer is set to have a huge year. While her name may be new to some, earlier this year, she received her first Grammy nomination for her second mixtape, You Should Be Here. She is also the only featured artist on Zayn Malik’s debut album, Mind of Mine.
