Kentucky in D.C.: McConnell says Harris-Walz win would be 'our worst nightmare'
Welcome back to Kentucky in D.C. — a look at what members of our state's federal delegation have been up to.
Federal lawmakers may have an August break from votes on the floor. But that didn't stop them from making their thoughts known.
To start, Louisville held this year's National Conference of State Legislators Legislative Summit, and Sen. Mitch McConnell gave the keynote speech at its Republican breakfast.
Here are some takeaways from McConnell's address:
McConnell blasts Democratic party and Harris-Walz ticket
McConnell said "our worst nightmare" is if Democrats win the White House in November.
His comments followed Vice President Kamala Harris' announcement that she'd selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate — with McConnell saying the ticket represents the "far-left" side of the Democratic Party.
If voters end up sending the Harris-Walz administration to the White House, McConnell said he thinks Democrats will:
Try to get rid of the filibuster
Create two new states: Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico
And pack the Supreme Court with liberal-leaning judges
He also touched on state politics, calling Senate President Robert Stivers and House Speaker David Osborne the "real leaders of Kentucky," who navigate through challenging legislative issues familiar across the country.
In addition to discussing the divisiveness that can come with politics, McConnell touched on bipartisanship and his support for the bipartisan infrastructure package that was signed by President Joe Biden in 2021.
"I think when the voters have spoken and given divided government, they're not necessarily saying 'do nothing,'" he said. "They're saying, 'OK, you've got some big differences. ... Look at the things that you guys could agree on and make some progress with the country.'"
Social media posts of the week
Congressman Thomas Massie touts support for his Senior Citizens Tax Elimination: The bill would eliminate the double tax on social security benefits, and Massie previously said the legislation would help middle-class seniors and "boost the retirement income of millions of older Americans."
Earlier last week, the bill picked up a co-sponsor in Wisconsin Rep. Derrick Francis Van Orden, who Massie thanked on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"It's great to have your support!" Massie wrote to Van Orden.
Congressman Morgan McGarvey backs Harris-Walz ticket: When Harris announced she picked Walz as her running mate, McGarvey wasted no time showing his support on social media. McGarvey posted multiple times throughout the week supporting the campaign, and even referenced pop stars Chappell Roan and Charli XCX.
"I hear it's a Midwest Princess, Brat Summer," McGarvey wrote.
