Tropical Storm Francine: Storm hit Louisiana as Category 2, pelted southeast with wind, rain
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — As of the 10 p.m. Wednesday update from the National Hurricane Center, Francine has slowed down to a tropical storm and has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph and a minimum pressure of 982 mb.
Francine hit the Louisiana coast as a Category 2 storm in the 5 o’clock hour but quickly downgraded back to Category 1 and then to a tropical storm. The center of the storm is now moving to the northeast at 16 mph.
Some homes and businesses near Baton Rouge reported power outages as the storm moved closer to the capital.
The strongest winds overall were in the core near the coast; however, hurricane-force winds were possible even up to the Baton Rouge area. Francine will continue to weaken as it continues off to the north.
Hurricane warnings (red) include East Baton Rouge Parish and our southwestern parishes where hurricane conditions were possible. Tropical storm warnings (blue) were posted for our remaining area. Livingston Parish also was included in a hurricane watch.
Tropical storm force conditions moved in Wednesday afternoon, and hurricane conditions are possible in the warning area into the evening.
A Tornado Watch was issued for portions of Southeast Louisiana until 11 p.m. Quick-spin-up tornadoes were possible with rain bands as they moved in from Francine. Remember, a tornado watch means the environment is favorable for tornadoes. Make sure to have multiple ways to receive warnings.
