Leawood police investigating reports of suspicious man offering child candy

LEAWOOD, Kan. — The Leawood Police Department is investigating after receiving reports of a man driving a white van who offered a child candy.

The Leawood Police Department received a call for suspicious activity around W. 103rd Street and Meadow Lane in Leawood on Saturday afternoon.

The caller said their child was riding a scooter in the neighborhood when the incident happened. The child quickly told their parents, who called police.

Officers responded to the area to investigate, but could not find the van or driver. Police said that the van’s driver was a “tan” white man with white hair and no facial hair.

“People are watching, and hopefully they get caught,” Leawood resident, Rick Garr shared with FOX4 Monday. “It’s very upsetting for somebody to be going around doing this.”

Leawood police said its initial investigation determined the man never left their van before the child ran home to alert their parents. The white van was described as a panel van with damage on the back.

The department said similar situations are being posted on social media and they are investigating other possible incidents involving the van.

“In Leawood, this is rare, for us to have an incident like this, but we want families to be vigilant and for children to be vigilant when they are out in their neighborhoods,” Capt. Jason Ahring, with the Leawood Police Department said.

“There is some information on social media that would indicate there may be more than one incident. We have not been able to verify that,” Ahring added.

Leawood police encourage parents to have conversations with their children regarding interactions with strangers.

“Whoever it is, I hope they get some help,” Garr added.

If you have any information about this incident, contact the Leawood Police Department at [email protected] or call 913-266-0696.

“We are very fortunate Leawood is a safe community and consistently have been recognized as a safe community and we want that to continue,” Ahring said.
