Line Fire: Some schools closed as wildfire near San Bernardino roars past 20,000 acres

The Line Fire near Highland expanded to 20,553 acres Sunday night, with the blaze threatening 36,328 structures, including single and multi-family homes, commercial buildings, and other minor structures, Cal Fire reported.

The Line Fire in San Bernardino County, which has burned more than 20,000 acres since its start on Sept. 5, has impacted the air quality in several counties and especially dramatically in the areas closest to the fire.

The fire was 3% contained as of Monday morning, according to Cal Fire, and smoke from the fire is also impacted the sun’s appearance.

Here’s what to know about school closures in the areas around the wildfire.

Line Fire school closures

  • Hesperia Unified School District: Officials said Sunday that due to improving conditions and the current air quality management district level of "Moderate," the district plans to hold normal school hours, with schools modifying events to limit outside activities.

  • Victor Elementary School District: Officials are closely monitoring the air quality conditions and currently plan to remain open. As a precaution, the district is activating inclement weather protocols, which means students will be kept indoors and outdoor activities limited throughout the day. All other instructional activities will proceed as usual.

  • Lucerne Valley Unified: Schools will be open while officials monitor air quality. The school district will also monitor air quality for after school activities/sports and make decisions early in the day regarding any possible changes to scheduling.

  • Barstow Unified School District: All schools will remain open.

  • Redlands Unified School District: Due to the evacuation notices in East Highland, all Redlands Unified schools and facilities will remain closed for students and staff on Tuesday, Sept. 10, with the exception of all site administrators and District management staff. If any other employee group is needed, they will be contacted directly by their department supervisor. All RUSD students and employees will return back to school on Wednesday, the district posted Monday afternoon.

  • Rim of the World Unified School District: The district will close schools through Sept. 13 or until further notice.

  • Bear Valley Unified School District: Located in the San Bernardino Mountains, the Bear Valley district said there will be no school for the rest of the week due to continued impacts from the Line Fire.

  • Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District: All schools will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

  • Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa will be closed on Tuesday. All classes and operations will be canceled, except for emergency personnel. The college will provide the next update by Tuesday evening on whether it will reopen on Wednesday.

  • San Bernardino City Unified School District: Bonnie Oehl Elementary School and Serrano Middle School will be closed Tuesday. All others will remain open.

  • California State University, San Bernardino will continue to have classes with outdoor activities moved indoors or rescheduled. Air systems will be modified to limit outdoor smoke from entering classrooms.

  • Apple Valley Unified School District: Schools will remain open, with district officials monitoring air quality.
