North Dakota voters will vote on high-profile primary races today, including selecting the Republican to compete for governor and the state’s sole U.S. House seat.
It’s been a busy time in North Dakota politics since Gov. Doug Burgum announced in January he would not seek a third term. The next day, U.S. Rep. Kelly Armstrong, who had intended to seek reelection, switched gears and announced plans to run for governor.
Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller also joined the race for governor. The winner will go on to face Democrat Merrill Piepkorn in November.
The U.S. House race has five Republican candidates, though one has not been actively campaigning. Public Service Commissioner Julie Fedorchak, conservative former state lawmaker Rick Becker, attorney and former Miss America Cara Mund and retired veteran Alex Balazs have had fiery debates in the race for the nomination. Williston woman Sharlet Mohr also is on the ballot. The winner will compete against either Democrat Trygve Hammer or Roland Riemers.
Several Republican incumbents are facing legislative challenges. Voters also will decide on a ballot measure to establish age limits for North Dakota members of Congress. In addition, voters will weigh in on local city, county and school board races.
