Diddy’s alarming case: The intersection of power, abuse and accountability | Rooted in Progress
TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — “See, we date ’em like we hate ’em, see ’em like we don’t need ’em. Treat ’em like we beat ’em, and never give up freedom.” You might recognize those lyrics from Biggie and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ 1997 song “The World is Filled.”
Fast forward nearly 30 years later, these lines are not aging well for the glorified hip hop mogul.
These days the 54-year-old is not living a life of luxury in one of his million dollar mansions but a cold jail cell in Manhattan. He was arrested this week, facing charges of racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. Additionally, Combs has faced several lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault and misconduct in the past year.
He has denied any wrongdoing.
At two separate hearings, a judge denied him bail, leaving him in jail until a potential trial, which could start in early 2025.
On today’s episode of Rooted in Progress, we are breaking down this developing case with State Rep. and local attorney Michele Rayner. During this discussion, we talk about the impact of Comb’s arrest — not just for the culture, but for many survivors of sex trafficking.
We also highlight the power of the #MeToo movement and how to hold celebrities of this caliber accountable.
