Live mortar shell from Korean War found in Independence man’s home

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A live explosive was found in the residence of an Independence man’s home on Monday morning.

Around 11:40 a.m., Independence police and fire dispatch received a call from someone who discovered what he believed to be live, military explosives.

The Independence Fire Department said the device was discovered in the residence of the caller’s father and is believed to be a mortar shell from the Korean War.

IPD Bomb Squad confirmed that the ordinance was live and contacted officials from the Whitman Air Force Base, who came to the scene.

The officials will be disposing of the device.
