Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries schedules drawdown for False River in September

POINTE COUPEE PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) — The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced on Wednesday, July 24 that they have scheduled a drawdown for the False River which will start on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

According to a news release, “The lake will be lowered at a rate of 1.5 inches per day to a maximum of 6 feet below the pool stage of 16 feet.”

Officials encourage drawdowns for the False River every three years. The last drawdown took place in the winter of 2021-2022.

“The drawdown structure is scheduled to close on January 15, 2025, and the lake will be allowed to refill,” according to a news release.

LDWF states, “water level reductions are utilized as a management tool to improve water quality, reduce the impacts of sedimentation, and improve sportfish habitat.”

Officials are encouraging property owners to take action before the drawdown begins.

“Property owners should take necessary action to secure or remove vessels, floating docks, and other items potentially impacted by the drawdown prior to its commencement,” LDWF said.

Fishing and other recreational use will still be allowed on the lake as it will remain open throughout the drawdown, according to a news release.
