BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — An LSU professor is currently working on research that could help treat cancer.

Roger Laine, LSU Biological Sciences professor, first started his research about 10 years ago with a dog safety trial. Laine spoke about his passion for the project.

“Well, I wake up excited every day. Research takes time, but we have been lucky to have good colleagues,” said Laine.

Laine said his colleagues tested his treatment on mice and discovered results similar to the dog trial. The treatment destroyed the tumors.

“Four hours later, the tumors are bloody,” said Laine.

Laine said the mice are injected with a polysaccharide, called Serratia.

“This approach is, is one of the only ones I know where there are no side effects,” said Laine.

Laine is also studying the bacteria that causes strep throat to treat cancer. He said that research first started at Vanderbilt University. Laine says he wants to take it a step further.

“It’s another tool for the oncologist to treat cancer,” said Laine.

Laine said his next steps include conducting human trials, finding investors and drugmakers.

“We hope that major pharma will come in and take over it,” said Laine.
