Lupita Nyong’o looks brilliant in her mermaid-style brocade gown
Queen of Katwe star Lupita Nyong’o is a modern fashion icon. She never shies away from color or pattern, and often renders us breathless with her award show ensembles. Yesterday, Nyong’o stunned us once again at the 23rd Annual ELLE Women in Hollywood Awards. She is one of eight other women who were honored by ELLE Magazine last night.
Nyong’o arrived wearing a rust and teal brocade gown in a mermaid-style. The metallic-esque fabric is cinched at the waist by a matching belt, and the calf-length hem flares at the knee. The style is reminiscent of classic 1950s mermaid gowns worn by bombshells of the era.
Wearing some strappy gold heels, and carrying a simple gold clutch, Nyong’o actually is a gem. She’s sparkling all over and we envy her for it.
Here’s Nyong’o’s outfit in it’s #GlamShed form.

The beautiful Nyong’o tied her hair back with a matching rust brocade hair tie and paired the look with diamond encrusted gold hoop earrings. Also, take minute to check out Nyong’o’s eye makeup. The two-winged eye liner is cool AF as is, but filling the space with gold shimmer really is getting us going.
According to the Seattle Times, Nyong’o spoke about the value of mentoring after finding herself guiding young actors on the set of Queen of Katwe. She herself was mentored by Katwe director, Mira Nair, during her internship with Nair over 10 years ago. Then, while starring in Nair’s film, Nyong’o, “learned in the most intimate and personal way how powerfully we can affect young girls with our choices,” she said.
Nyong’o called upon the other attendees of the event to “demonstrate a larger vision of self-worth to those we mentor and teach.”
Nyong’o went on to say, “Show young women that building community is stronger than the individual instinct to survive. That it’s not even who gets what piece of the pie, but about creating the pies ourselves and then making more for those in need.”
Not only is Nyong’o a fashion powerhouse, but she’s actively trying to make girls feel better about being girls. Guys, Lupita Nyong’o rules — as if you didn’t know that already.
