Madison fertility treatment center closing at end of 2024

MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — After 20 years of service, a Madison fertility treatment center will close its doors at the end of the year.

On August 12, the Huntsville Reproductive Medicine, P.C. (HRM) clinic announced on Facebook that it would be closing its doors on January 1, 2025.

The clinic said, “We understand the impact this may have on our patients and their families and we want to assure you that we will continue to support you during this transition.”

After September 5, the clinic says it will not accept any new patients.

The IVF series services are reportedly on track as scheduled, but the clinic said it would not add new patients to the service.

If patients have questions regarding the closure, the clinic said to reach out but allow five business days to respond as they ‘shape recommendations to your specific needs.’

The clinic has provided a FAQ sheet, answering questions about what will happen to patient medical treatment or IUI cycle, how to get copies of their or their partner’s medical records, when the last cycles to retrieve eggs or transfer embryos will be and what will happen to stored embryos.

You can find the entire FAQ sheet on HRM’s Facebook page.

The clinic took to Facebook again on August 13 to clarify that the decision to close the clinic was not based on the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling.

“In February, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that three couples whose frozen embryos were destroyed in an accident at a storage facility could pursue wrongful death lawsuits for their ‘extrauterine children.’ The ruling, treating an embryo the same as a child or gestating fetus under the wrongful death statute, raised concerns about civil liabilities for clinics,” the Associated Press reported.

A law signed by Governor Kay Ivey on March 7, 2024, which took effect immediately, protects providers and doctors from potential legal liability for damage to embryos after the court ruling.

More information about the closure of HRM can be found on the clinic’s Facebook page.
