Maintenance issues at Mayfair Towers nearly out of control, residents say

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Tenants at the Mayfair Towers are fed up with the lack of maintenance in their building.

They say the maintenance issues at the senior living apartment building are accumulating, and that those issues have been ignored for quite some time.

Currently, there is no manager in the building and no full-time maintenance technician.

Linda Hoyt is an 86-year-old tenant here at Mayfair who has served as the property attendant for nine years. Her responsibility is to make sure that the senior tenants and the building are safe enough to live in.

Hoyt attempts to make repairs herself, which includes maintaining the one and only working washing machine, water leaks and clearing rodents just to name a few.

“It has deteriorated so much,” Hoyt said. “This used to be the nicest HUD apartment building in the whole city of Huntsville and now it’s getting such a bad reputation because they don’t pay their bills and get things done. They are just letting it go downhill.”

What Hoyt is referring to is Redwood Communities.

Redwood is the same ownership and management group that ignored the maintenance issues at the Russel Erskine apartments.

News 19 reached out to Redwood who replied about the issues saying:

“We will ensure prompt investigation of any outstanding issues, as the safety and security of our residents and this community is of the utmost importance to our team.”

Huntsville city councilman Bill Kling says it’s time to call them out again.

“I’m sure they are making a profit and taking federal money and they’ve got responsibilities and it’s just unconscionable that they are not doing what they are supposed to be doing and something has got to be done about it,” said Kling.

“Why they have to live under these conditions is not right, so I really want things done,” said Hoyt. “I want it fixed and I want it back the way it used to be.”

News 19 will continue to follow this story and provide an update on the maintenance repairs at Mayfair Towers.
