Maison Margiela Made Yoga Mats, Wetsuits and Fairy Details Stylish, and We Are Entranced

What do yoga mats, wetsuits and fairy ears have in common? They all made appearances in Maison Margiela’s intergalactic-esque Paris Fashion Week Womenswear Spring/Summer 2017 show.

The haute couture label sent models down the runway in sporty outfits with unconventional accessories that don’t normally have a place on the runway —but leave it to John Galliano to find a way.

One model wore a pink sweater and a matching bodysuit with a big black belt around her waist, a bright blue rubber head wrap and matching lipstick. And that’s not even the weirdest part. The model carried a yoga mat in the same shade as her lipstick and rubber headpiece, as if anyone would wear that fluffy outfit to yoga. Galliano turned a wetsuit into a dress, sending another model down the catwalk in a nude tank and a black, white, orange and blue wetsuit peeled down to the waist. A few of the models wore headsets, but most wore these weird accessories that made it look like they had really big, crystal pointy ears. And if they weren’t wearing rubber head wraps, they were wearing deconstructed swim caps. Our favorite may have been the goggles that looked as if they had been left in the sun too long and had melted.

The models sported sparkly bright makeup and chunky rubber shoes.

The overall feel was athletic and innovative. In fact, the program notes gave it away: “The mission of Maison Margiela is to reject convention, and our evolving proposition stimulates nostalgia and innovation in equal parts. We believe that familiarity must be unsettled and spontaneous, with an intrinsic strangeness.”

Yeah, sounds about right.
