Man in critical condition after jumping off interstate following chase, officials say

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A man is in critical condition after law enforcement officials said he jumped off the interstate during a pursuit. The chase started around 1:25 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, including two parishes.

A Port Allen City Marshal’s office employee started a traffic stop. David Jones, chief deputy for Port Allen City Marshal’s Office, said the vehicle ran a stop sign.

The suspect reportedly got into his truck and fled the scene while “the deputy marshal was filling out the citation,” Jones said. The pursuit began “on the I-110 Frontage Road at the intersection of LA 415 and then ended at Interstate I-110.”

Speeds reached up to 50 mph, and the man drove across the Mississippi River bridge.

Jones said he entered Baton Rouge and then “sideswiped the guardrail on the interstate, exited the truck and jumped over the rail.”

The Baton Rouge Police Department was called to assist WBRSO around 1:29 a.m.

Upon arrival, they found out about the crash on the interstate, BRPD said.

According to BRPD, the suspect jumped from the interstate between the 1000 and 1100 block of South Boulevard.

Several areas of roadway in that area are elevated.

BRPD said EMS took him to a hospital with injuries that are considered life-threatening.

Jones said an “officer witnessed the suspect throwing something out the window,” which was suspected to be drugs.

He said the items will be tested, and an arrest warrant will be issued once confirmation is made.

Charges are pending in this case, Jones said.
