Man sentenced for attempting to steal from Buffalo construction site

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo man was sentenced Friday morning for attempting to steal from a construction site on Best Street in February 2023, the Erie County District Attorney’s Office announced.

According to officials, around 3:45 a.m. on Feb. 16 of that year, Sergio Brooks knowingly and unlawfully entered a construction site on Best Street near Michigan Avenue to commit a larceny. The building was partially completed at the time of the crime.

Buffalo police were alerted by a security system and located Brooks nearby. He ran from police, dropping two bags of stolen property in the process. Police found pipes, circuit breakers, valves, copper, and other metal construction materials inside of the bags.

Brooks, now 38, was found guilty in July of one count of third-degree burglary and one count of fourth-degree grand larceny. He was sentenced Friday to an indeterminate sentence of 2 to 6 years in prison.
