Many senior citizens struggling after days without power

CLEVELAND (WJW) – More than 100 senior citizens living at Kirby Manor on Cleveland’s west side say they have been struggling since Tuesday when they lost power due to the severe storms that swept through the area.

“It’s been rough,“ said resident Okey Drake. “People have insulin that has to be refrigerated. All our food spoiled.”

Many residents say they need assistance with walking, and not having an elevator makes it difficult to get around. They also say the hallways in the complex are dark, and not having air conditioning or fans makes it difficult to sleep.

Those living at the senior citizen complex say they never thought they would be in the dark for days. They have been dealing with pitch black hallways, stuffy hot apartments, no working elevators and nowhere to keep medicines or food cold.

On Friday, they received some much needed help from the city of Cleveland.

“This is Operation Storm Recovery Cleveland,” said Mary McNamara, director of aging for the city of Cleveland.

She and others delivered food, ice and cold drinks to the residents.

McNamara and Tammy Hanna, community relations for the city of Cleveland, say they have been going to several senior citizen facilities to help residents in need.

“We will get through this together,” Hanna said.
