Metro Game Day Express helps shuttle Bills fans to Highmark
BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) — Thousands of Western New Yorkers use the NFTA Metro in their routines every day. Three years ago, they decided to add a shuttle service that can be part of Buffalo Bills fans game day plans.
“It really does provide those who depend on public transit, get to and from the games, but it also helps congestion and anything we can do to help that game day congestion at the stadium while it might be small, it’s helping,” said Helen Tederous, director of public affairs with the NFTA.
The idea for the Metro Game Day Express shifted into gear when the Bills reached out to the NFTA asking for their help to provide a route to help their employees get to the stadium on game days. Then, the idea expanded the idea to Bills fans and they say it’s growing in popularity.
“Last year, we averaged about a 175 rides to and from the stadium, this year, we are averaging about 500 rides so it just shows how popular it is,” said Tederous.
For fans who are interested in taking the shuttle, there are pick up locations in both Erie and Niagara County, where fans can hop aboard, and head to Orchard Park.
“We wanted to be as convenient for our community as possible so riders could have a lot of opportunities the one here at 181 Ellicot is the most popular, and I think that is because people can get here on a Sunday from public transport,” said Tederous.
The bus ride costs $5 each leg of the trip and is first come first serve.
“It’s very exciting for people to ride together, as long as they’re Bills fans,” Tederous laughed. “Really everyone’s welcomed but you’re a little more welcome if you a Bills fan.”
