Michigan gas prices fall to lowest price since June

Michigan’s average gas prices continued to drop this week, falling a nickel a gallon Sunday to $3.41 for regular unleaded, which could help families planning to take a holiday road trip Labor Day weekend as their last summer hurrah.

"Gas prices continue to fall, with Michigan motorists seeing the lowest prices since early June," Adrienne Woodland, a spokeswoman for AAA, said. "Mild gasoline demand, steady supply, and low oil costs may cause pump prices to slide further."

Gas is 39 cents less than a month ago and 37 cents less than a year ago.

Motorists, on average, are paying an average of $51 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline.

Nationally, domestic travel over Labor Day weekend is up 9% compared with last year, while the cost to travel domestically is down 2%, according to the auto club.

GasBuddy, which, in addition to AAA, also tracks gas prices, noted Monday that the average price of regular gas for the nation fell for the fourth straight week to $3.30 a gallon, and the price of diesel is now $3.67 a gallon, the lowest since early 2022.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said it seemed fitting prices were so low "in the run-up to Labor Day," which gives "Americans one last chance to hit the road." Moreover, in eight states, the average gas prices is below $3 a gallon.

Gas demand went up from 9.04 million barrels a day to 9.19 million, according to the Energy Information Administration. Meanwhile, total domestic gasoline stocks fell from 222.2 million barrels to 220.6 million barrels, but gasoline production increased, averaging 9.8 million barrels daily.

Compared with last week, metro Detroit’s average also fell. On Sunday, it was $3.44 a gallon.

Throughout Michigan, the most expensive average gas prices by city were: Ann Arbor, $3.52 a gallon; Jackson, $3.45, and Marquette, $3.44, while the least expensive were in Grand Rapids, $3.34; Flint, $3.34, and Saginaw, $3.36.
