With the Republican National Convention wrapping up Thursday, city officials are working with U.S. Secret Service to tear down the perimeter barriers that had surrounded the main downtown RNC venues of Fiserv Forum, UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena and the Baird Center.

The city started removing the perimeter at 12:01 a.m. Friday, said Tiffany Shephard, spokesperson for Milwaukee's Department of Public Works.

Workers are prioritizing clearing major streets and expect everything to be out of the way by first thing Monday morning, said Jeff Fleming, spokesperson for Mayor Cavalier Johnson.

Fences and concrete barriers created a maze throughout downtown last week, including vehicle and pedestrian security checkpoints.

Construction projects around the city that were halted during the RNC will resume Friday and Monday, Shepherd said.

Just after 1:30 a.m. Friday, former President Donald Trump's deputy director of communications, Margo Martin, tweeted a video of Trump and his wife, Melania, waving goodbye and boarding a plane leaving Milwaukee. Martin later shared a clip of the couple arriving at their destination.
