Mississippi man arrested following fatal St. John the Baptist Parish crash

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A Mississippi man has been arrested in connection with a crash that left a Metairie woman dead in St. John the Baptist Parish on Monday, Aug. 12.

The Louisiana State Police reported the crash happened on Interstate 55 around 10 a.m.

LSP officials said an initial investigation shows a Ford Escape driven by 37-year-old Erica Sagona was disabled in the right shoulder of I-55 while a Ford F-150 driven by 35-year-old Cory Conrad was driving south in the right lane.

Conrad then allegedly tried to pass another vehicle by driving onto the right shoulder when he hit the back of the Ford Escape.

Sagona was inside the car at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Conrad suffered minor injuries. According to the LSP, he was not restrained at the time of the crash.

Conrad was arrested and faces charges of reckless driving and negligent homicide.

According to the LSP, “Impairment is not suspected, however, standard toxicology samples will be taken and submitted for analysis.”

The investigation is ongoing.
