Monique Miller files to succeed Fine in South Brevard's Florida House District 33

A Palm Bay Republican and frequent candidate for office has become the sixth person to file for the open District 33 seat in the Florida House of Representatives. Monique Miller, a member of Moms for Liberty, hopes to succeed Randy Fine (R-Palm Bay) who has established himself as a conservative firebrand in the seat, which he won by wide margins in four elections. Term limits are keeping Fine from running again, and instead he's filed to run for Florida Senate in District 19. Fine also made headlines after saying Gov. Ron DeSantis approached him earlier this year about possibly assuming the presidency of Florida Atlantic University. The university has said they are in the midst of a formal search process.

The future of District 33 also remains up in the air with several contenders already announced for next year's election. As of now, Miller will face two other Republicans in a primary next August to determine who will make it to November's general election. Republicans Logan Luse, Chandler Langevin and Erika Orriss have all already filed. In April, however, Luse was arrested on a DUI charge. His campaign status remains active as of May 22, according to the Florida Department of State.

Miller enters the District 33 race not having previously held office but no stranger to campaigning. She previously ran an unsuccessful campaign for Florida Senate in 2014 when she challenged incumbent Thad Altman for his District 16 seat and lost in a primary. She also lost in the primary for Florida House District 52 in 2016 when she again lost to Altman to represent Melbourne and the beaches in the state's congress.

Miller is a former strategic account manager in the computer industry with a master's of business administration from Emory University's Goizueta Business School. Miller did not respond to a request for comment from FLORIDA TODAY as of Monday afternoon.

House District 33 includes much of South Brevard including parts of West Melbourne, Palm Bay and Malabar. Members of the Florida House receive a $29,697 annual salary and serve for two-year terms with a limit of four terms.
