Kentucky interstate shooting: Authorities believe the body of a man suspected of shooting and wounding five people on a Kentucky interstate has been found just outside London, Kentucky. The nearly two-week manhunt ended with two internet sleuths tracking vulture activity near the interstate and discovering the body believed to be Joseph Couch. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. The latest >

‘People have been in fear’: The search for Couch had area residents on edge. Laurel County Sheriff John Root said “people have been in fear,” and he hopes the “county can get back to what’s normal” now. Read more >

Diddy jailed: After defense attorneys fought to keep Sean “Diddy” Combs out of jail for his sex trafficking arrest, the music mogul was sent back to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. The facility has been the primary federal detention center since 2021, when the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan closed after a number of issues that were exposed after Jeffrey Epstein’s death. Problems plaguing the facility included lax security and crumbling infrastructure, the Associated Press reported. Details >

Bail denied: The rapper has been denied bail twice. On Wednesday, a judge ruled that Combs’ plan — which included a $50 million bail offer, GPS monitoring and strict limitations on visitors — was “insufficient” and no conditions could guard against the risk of him threatening or harming witnesses. Combs pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges he physically and sexually abused women for years. Timeline >

Explosions: Walkie-talkies blew up in parts of Lebanon on Wednesday in a second wave of attacks targeting devices a day after Hezbollah pagers exploded. In the second wave, at least 20 people were killed and more than 450 wounded, the Health Ministry reported. The attacks were widely believed to be carried out by Israel, raising concerns the conflict could escalate into war. Is Israel preparing for a war with Hezbollah? >

Hackers: Iranian hackers tried to interest President Joe Biden’s campaign in information stolen from former President Donald Trump’s campaign, sending unsolicited emails to people associated with Biden in an effort to interfere in the 2024 election, the FBI said Wednesday. Officials said there’s no indication any of the recipients responded. The announcement is the latest effort by government officials to call out what they say is Iran’s ongoing work to interfere in the presidential election. Read more >

Interest rate cut: The Federal Reserve has cut its benchmark interest rate for the first time in more than four years, which will have consequences for mortgage rates, car loans and credit card debt. The Fed’s half-point rate cut is a major strategic shift and a sign policymakers believe they’re winning the war against inflation. Wednesday’s cut lowers the federal funds rate into a range of 4.75% to 5%, down from its prior range of 5.25% to 5.5%. Read more >

What does the cut mean for me? The shift may seem subtle, but with more cuts expected, lower mortgage rates and better credit card rates could be on the horizon. Ultimately, the health of the overall economy will determine how much rates improve, but the Fed’s key interest rate will continue to affect Americans’ wallets. Here’s how inflation and the cost of borrowing have changed >

Border testimony: The mother of a woman who was raped and killed while hiking on a suburban Baltimore trail told lawmakers the suspect would have never been allowed in the U.S. if the Border Patrol had followed its own protocols. Patty Morin delivered a powerful statement to members of the House Committee on Homeland Security. “They say that the borders are safe. We live 1,800 miles away from the southern border. They’re not safe,” she said. Watch >

Rachel Morin case: Rachel Morin’s body was found in Bel Air, Maryland, on Aug. 6, 2023, and a suspect was arrested in Oklahoma 10 months later. Victor Martinez-Hernandez, 23, of El Salvador, was in the U.S. illegally. He faces first-degree murder, first-degree rape and kidnapping charges. The latest >

Passports: Americans can now renew their passports online, bypassing a mail-in paper application process that often caused delays. The State Department announced the change Wednesday. The online renewal system is available to adult passport holders whose passport has expired within the past five years or will expire in the coming year. Details >

Recall alert: A Utah company is recalling thousands of boxes of waffles as they may contain foreign objects. The Food and Drug Administration classified the recall as “Class II” on Sept. 13 of a voluntary recall from Kodiak Cakes LLC, for 7,300 boxes of its 40-count “Kodiak Protein-Packed Power Waffles, Buttermilk & Vanilla.” The recalled waffles were sold at Costco warehouses in the Midwest between July 15 and Aug. 25, Kodiak said.
