Mt. Healthy City Schools to layoff 80 employees, including 67 teachers

Dozens of Mount Healthy City Schools employees will be laid off by the end of the school year due to financial issues within the district.

The announcement came Friday morning. According to the district, 67 of the current 227 teachers, nine administrators and four exempt staff positions will be cut across the five schools by the time the 2024-25 academic year rolls around.

“We understand the impact that this decision has on our staff members and their families,” Superintendent Dr. Valerie Hawkins said in a press release. “The district remains committed to supporting our employees throughout this transition.”

Mount Healthy City Schools said the difficult decision seemed necessary to not only sustainably fix its financial issues, but also to maintain students’ education.

“We deeply appreciate the contributions of our staff members who are impacted by this decision,” added Human Resource Director Charles Ogdan. “Our priority is to ensure that they receive the necessary support and resources.”

With only a few months left in the school year, staff members who are laid off will continue to be paid as they scramble to find a new job with the assistance of the district’s Human Resources team.
