Multiple agencies responding to fire near Sawyer Street in Shawano

SHAWANO, Wis. (WFRV) – Firefighters battled a house fire in Shawano on Thursday evening.

Local 5 News was on the scene near the intersection of South Sawyer Street and East Center Street, where smoke is visible. Several fire engines were also on the scene.

Firefighters said when they arrived to the home around 6:30 Thursday night they saw bright orange flames and lots of thick, black smoke coming from the home.

They said that one person was in the home at the time of the fire, but that person was able to make it out safely on their own.

The city of Shawano assistant fire chief told Local 5 News that EMS personnel treated several firefighters for heat stroke like symptoms.

Firefighters said the home is inhabitable at this time. Neighbors tell Local 5 News that five people live in the home and that they believe that they were out of town at a baseball tournament when the fire started.

One woman who spoke with Local 5 News said she’s good friends with the people who live in the home that caught fire, and that it’s devastating that this happened.

“It’s devastating especially when you know the people,” said Lisa Lantz who lives across the street. “Anybody on this block we watch each other’s houses so it’s very devastating to see something like that.”

That neighbor said she called the people who lived in the home to tell them about what had happened. She described hearing popping noises when the fire started.

What caused the fire is not available at this time.

This is a developing story, and Local 5 News will update you on it when we learn more.
