Murfreesboro Police look to add gunshot detector to Rutherford County high school
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — A gunshot sensor could soon be installed at one Rutherford County school.
Rutherford County’s school board is scheduled to take a vote on Wednesday evening about whether or not to install a gunshot sensor at Central Magnet High School. The request to install that sensor came from the Murfreesboro Police Department.

If approved, Central Magnet High School would be the first school in Murfreesboro to deploy a sensor — and likely the only one.
The sensors are part of the police department’s “Real Time Crime Center.” The devices detect sounds that could potentially be gunshots and tell police the approximate area it came from, allowing for quicker responses to possible instances of gun violence.
The Murfreesboro Police Department told News 2 that the location of Central Magnet High, about one mile from their police station, made it a logical choice for a gunshot sensor. However, the department added that they do not plan to put sensors at any other Murfreesboro schools.

“The police department’s request is not related to any specific issues involving safety at the school. The request is based on the school’s geographic location which will work as part of a larger network of sensors.”
Statement from Public Information Officer Larry Flowers
The department has planned to install about 200 gunshot sensors before the network is officially up and running. As of print, Flowers said that they’ve installed around 160.
