‘We must bring excitement’: Portland City Council hears Keller proposals

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland city leaders are looking at multiple options regarding the future of the Keller Auditorium in Downtown Portland.

On Wednesday, three competing proposals were put on the table — which would either renovate or relocate the Keller.

The Portland City Council listened to a multitude of individuals give public testimony on Wednesday.

“The performing arts are suffering and have not fully recovered from the pandemic. I’m here to say we can not endorse any lost work,” said one person who gave testimony.

“We must bring new people to the arts. We must bring excitement to the cultural center in the heart of our great city,” another individual said.

A 2020 study showed the venue is in need of major upgrades – including seismic upgrades and accessible seating.

The first proposal for the Keller involves a major renovation.

The proposal from Halprin Landscape Conservancy would preserve the existing building. The renovation would last for 19 months starting in 2027. However, many who work at the Keller are concerned for their jobs if the theater is closed for that long.

A second proposal would rebuild the Keller across the Willamette River in the Lloyd District. The Urban Renaissance Group, which owns the mall, proposes bringing in a theater along with new homes, offices, and restaurants.

The third option calls for building on Portland State University’s campus in the South Blocks. The Portland Arts and Culture Center would seat more than 3,000 people, plus have an educational building and hotel.

“PSU’s proposal is the best option, it keeps the Keller Auditorium open while the new complex is being built and keeps the performing arts venue downtown,” said a person who testified at the meeting.

The Portland City Council will consider the three theater presentations – and choose a plan this July. Starting next month, the council will hear community feedback.
