National Urban League talks importance of voting ahead of election at New Orleans conference
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — On day one of the 2024 National Urban League Conference, League President Marc Morial discussed how officials plan to overcome several issues in the lead-up to the presidential election.
These issues include voter suppression, women’s rights and the state of diversity, equity and inclusion. All of which Morial says will be impacted under right-wing policy proposals from the Heritage Foundation known as “Project 2025.”
“The National Urban League acknowledges that but comes to bring hope and force against that, and a vision for tomorrow,” said Morial.

New Orleans City Council President Helena Moreno expressed her gratitude for how the event helped people understand their rights. She also referenced new legislation from Louisiana’s legislative session that she claims will cause some to experience voter suppression.
“Restrictions when it comes to absentee ballots, that for those with disabilities, it’s going to make it hard to vote. Tens of thousands of people, it’s going to make it harder to vote,” said Moreno.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell echoed a similar sentiment, emphasizing that voters must come together.
“We know there is a historic moment on the horizon, and we also understand we are a part of that. It is our time. Without a doubt we are stronger together,” said Cantrell.

Those in attendance say they agree that the time is now.
“If we want the future for our generation that we really want, to shape with a good environment, good jobs, good schools, we have to vote this November, ” said Yumeno Young.
