Neighborhood shares concerns following Prospect deadly shooting
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Neighbors and business owners attended a monthly meeting Monday night to voice their concerns following the deadly shooting in the early morning hours.
Just before 2 a.m. Monday, Kansas City police say several people were hurt when a fight escalated to a shooting near Gregory Boulevard and Prospect Avenue.
One man, a food truck operator identified as 31-year-old Dymund Shields, was killed.
Later on Monday, a monthly community meeting became a space for people to talk, including city council leaders.

“I think obviously having the shooting that occurred is top of mind and top of heart for everybody,” said Ryana Parks-Shaw who represents the 5th City Council District of Kansas City.
“This was maybe a quarter after 12 when I went down there and it was packed,” said Charles M. Kennedy, president of the Tri-Blenheim Neighborhood Association.
Alfie Carter and Darren Allen own the 6th Lounge, a club for people 30 and older. They close at midnight on Sundays.
They say crowds have been an issue for some time. But now it’s escalated to everyone’s worst fear.
“It’s actually running our business off. You know my question is if it were somewhere else, maybe the Plaza, Westport, I think something would’ve been done by now,” Allen said.

“He’s exactly right, because in Westport, they have several officers on foot walking around, officers on horseback,” Carter said.
The issue discussed during the meeting, crowds of people, some teenagers, are leaving Swope Park Sunday nights and head to Prospect, gathering on the street.
“You’ve got 12 year olds running up and down the street,” Allen said.
“We were there at 1:30 picking up trash outside and we heard the gunfire and we had to take cover ourselves,” Carter said.
Police shared with the group during the meeting. Almost 200 shell casings were found at the crime scene. They are looking at cameras in the area but so far no arrest have been made.
