If you never missed an episode of Downton Abbey, then we've got a sneaky feeling Netflix's upcoming period drama Bridgerton is going to become your new TV obsession when it drops on Christmas Day. Based on Julia Quinn's bestselling novels, this series unfolds in the "sexy, lavish and competitive world of Regency London high society," according to the streaming giant.

It's got a pretty major ensemble cast that features the likes of Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan, Silent Witness star Adjoa Andoh, W1A's Jonathan Bailey, Line of Duty's Polly Walker, Wolfblood's Ruby Barker and Vanity Fair's Claudia Jessie. Meanwhile, Julie Andrews will serve as the show narrator, Lady Whistledown. Bridgerton is also the first Netflix production for Grey's Anatomy creator (and all-round TV genius) Shonda Rhimes, who left US TV network ABC in 2017 after 15 years to form her own Shondaland production company.

What is Netflix's Bridgerton about?

The show is based on a series of historical romance novels written by Julia Quinn and focuses on, you guessed it, the Bridgerton family.

The official synopsis reads: "Bridgerton follows Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family as she makes her debut onto Regency London’s competitive marriage market. Hoping to follow in her parent’s footsteps and find a match sparked by true love, Daphne’s prospects initially seem to be unrivaled. But as her older brother begins to rule out her potential suitors, the high society scandal sheet written by the mysterious Lady Whistledown casts aspersions on Daphne.

"Enter the highly desirable and rebellious Duke of Hastings, committed bachelor and the catch of the season for the debutantes’ mamas. Despite proclaiming that they want nothing the other has to offer, their attraction is undeniable and sparks fly as they find themselves engaged in an increasing battle of wits while navigating society’s expectations for their future."

Who stars in Bridgerton?

As well as Nicola, Adjoa, Ruby, Jonathan, Polly and Claudia, you'll also see the likes of Phoebe Dynevor (Younger, Dickensian), Jason Barnett (Agatha Raisin, Lee and Dean) Luke Newton (The Lodge, The Cut) and Regé-Jean Page (For The People, Waterloo Road) in the show.
