News 19 partners with IHeartRadio for Back to School Blood Drive!
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Summer is a difficult time for blood donations, which can lead to the emergency need for all types. So as the season ends and the kids head back to school, blood centers are looking to replenish the supply.
We are partnering with IHeartRadio to give back and help LifeSouth Blood Centers with a ‘Back to School Blood Drive’ on August 7.
You may remember in February, News 19 worked with IHeartRadio for our first Valentine’s Blood Drive. That event was so big, LifeSouth had to bring a backup bloodmobile to help with donations, and we collected 153 pints of blood – all of which are long gone.
The hard truth is what we collected didn’t cover one day’s blood supply need for our community. In addition to helping in times of disaster, our blood donations with save lives through transfusions and elective life improving surgeries.
LifeSouth donation buses parked in front of the station, located at 200 Holmes Avenue Northwest, and our friends from iHeart will be here too! Donations will be accepted starting at 7 a.m., and last call for donation is at 6 p.m.
You don’t have to have an appointment, but if you would like to sign up for a time, you can click here.
You must be 17 years old, or 16 with parental permission, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health to donate blood. A photo ID is also needed.
Successful donors receive a $20 e-gift card and get a free snack. Your time is valuable, if you’d like to skip the lines and reserve a donation time, scan this code.
Almost everyone is eligible to donate, even in the following circumstances:
When you arrive, you’ll be asked to present your photo ID, answer some questions about your health and undergo a mini-physical. The average donation time for whole blood is 10 minutes.
Post donation, you’ll sit and relax for at least 10 minutes and be asked to avoid strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting for a few hours.
