Nicholas Kirkwood Turns 10
If Manolo Blahniks are for “Sex and the City” devotees and Christian Louboutins are for “Real Housewives,” then Nicholas Kirkwood’s colorful confections are for fashion iconoclasts. The British designer, who was first championed by the late Isabella Blow, creates outrageous rainbow-colored heels that look more like art pieces than shoes and have garnered a cult following with fans like Grace Jones, Sienna Miller and Michele Obama.
This season marks the designer’s tenth anniversary and though Kirkwood has referenced everything from Keith Haring graffiti to Ming Dynasty porcelain, he’s created a capsule collection that’s all about the ‘80s— think Pac-Man and Star Wars— to celebrate. Here’s a look back at some of Kirkwood’s most celebrated designs.
