NM Department of Health reports first West Nile Virus infection of 2024

CLAYTON, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Health confirmed New Mexico’s first West Nile Virus infection of the year. The DOH said a person in Union County was infected but was not hospitalized and is recovering at home.

Last year, the state had the third highest number of human infections of West Nile since 2002 with 80 cases and eight deaths. On average, New Mexico averages 35 cases per year. Health experts are reminding New Mexicans that avoiding mosquito bites is the first line of defense against West Nile.
