NMDOT receives $71M grant to replace two bridges on I-25 in Socorro County
SOCORRO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Transportation was awarded a $71 million grant to help replace two bridges on Interstate 25 in Socorro County.
The grant funding is through the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) competitive Bridge Investment Program and will go toward new bridges that span over Nogal Canyon. NMDOT said the existing truss bridges have experienced deterioration and are approaching the end of their service lives.

The project also includes the reconstruction of I-25 as it approaches the new bridges and flattening the decent grade into Nogal Canyon, making it appropriate for current design speeds, according to NMDOT.
“The New Mexico Department of Transportation is ecstatic to receive this funding to address the infrastructure needs in this portion of the state and make this the signature bridge of our interstate system,” NMDOT Cabinet Secretary Ricky Serna said in a news release.
The bridges currently support 2,933 trucks and 12,220 vehicles daily, NMDOT said. The estimated project cost is $142,526,324.
NMDOT plans to match the grant with $34,750,724 and will use $36,525,600 in additional federal funding to cover the cost of the project.
