The claim: Image shows O.J. Simpson's last social media post said, 'I did it'

An April 11 Facebook post (direct link, archived link) shows what looks like a screenshot of a post from O.J. Simpson, the former football player who was acquitted on charges of murdering his wife and her friend 30 years ago.

"I did it," says the post, which is dated April 10, the same day Simpson died of cancer.

Texts above the post reads, "This was the last thing OJ Simpson tweeted before he passed. What did he mean by this?"

The image is fabricated. There is no evidence Simpson made any social media post on April 10, related to the murders or anything else.

Last post from Simpson was update about his health

In 1995, Simpson stood accused in the "Trial of the Century" for the stabbing murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman, who were found dead in front of her Los Angeles home. Simpson was acquitted of the crime, though a civil jury later found him liable and he was ordered to pay $33.5 million to the Brown and Goldman families. The Los Angeles Times reports Simpson, who spent nine years in prison for a 2007 armed robbery, has paid about $100,000 of that judgment, which has now ballooned to more than $100 million with interest.

Simpson later worked on a book titled "If I Did It" which he asserted was a “hypothetical” description of how he would have killed Brown Simpson and Goldman. But the claim that Simpson posted an outright confession a day before he died is unfounded.

X searches show no evidence of other users reposting or responding to such a post. And such a post also would have made international news, but there are no reports from credible sources that such a post was made.

Simpson's last social media post was a video on Feb. 11, the day of the Super Bowl. Simpson had been diagnosed with prostate cancer a year prior and spent part of the video providing an update about his health.

“Hey, let me take a moment to say thank you to all the people who reached out to me,” he said. “My health is good. Obviously, I’m dealing with some issues, but hey, I think I’m just about over it and I’ll be back on that golf course, hopefully in a couple of weeks.”

Heavy and Independent also reported this was his last post before his death.

On April 11, Simpson’s family posted an official announcement to his X account that he had died at the age of 76.

USA TODAY reached out to the user who shared the post for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
