SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell said in an interview with WCIA Thursday there is no evidence that former Sangamon County Deputy Sean Grayson’s fatal shooting of Sonya Massey, a Black woman, was racially motivated.

Records show deputy charged with Sonya Massey’s murder had history of disciplinary issues at previous job

“There’s nothing here at the agency that we have currently,” Campbell said. “There was no complaints about racial issues and nothing came from other agencies about racial issues. So as of right now, I have no indication that that was a factor.”

Campbell emphasized the number of trainings the Sheriff’s Office deputies need to go through, including racial bias training. He said all of his deputies are always attending more trainings on a variety of subjects, including seasoned veterans.

“I think that it’s important that we continue to look at different types of of implicit bias training and cultural diversity training,” Campbell added. “And it’s something that we mandate and the people have to do it here every year.”
