‘No longer a threat’: Man runs on Wingate University baseball field after injuring himself with his gun, officials say

WINGATE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Wingate University campus is now safe after a shooting during a youth game prompted a lockdown, school officials say.

Officials say the campus was put on lockdown just before 7 p.m. on Friday, June 28, after reports of a shooting near the baseball field.

According to investigators, a man drove erratically down Wilson Street before driving his truck into a ditch. He then fired several shots inside the truck cab, injuring himself.

The man jumped out of his truck and over a fence. Officers say they arrived to find him “running around the baseball field” where a youth baseball game was being held.

First responders were giving the man medical care when he started to resist and ran off, authorities say. He was quickly caught and subdued before being airlifted to a local hospital. He remains in critical condition.

The shooter is not a student or affiliated with the school. He is not being identified at this time.

No one else was hurt or involved in the incident.

The lockdown lasted about an hour. Classes for the first summer session ended the day before.
