North Carolina Musicians Urge Hurricane Relief Donations
Numerous North Carolina musicians are leading the charge to raise funds to aid relief and recovery efforts in the wake of catastrophic damage to the region last week from Hurricane Helene. Western North Carolina and specifically the city of Asheville were particularly hard hit, and thousands of residents remain without power or fresh water.
“Me and my team have been making some calls and I think we’ve got something really special lined up to help the Carolinas as much as we can,” said country star Luke Combs, who lived in Asheville when he was younger.
More from Spin:
“Anyone who knows anything about me knows what North Carolina and specifically this area in the mountains means to me personally as well as creatively,” added Eric Church, who urged donations to the Red Cross. “While we’re still gauging the extent of destruction and harm, our hearts remain with the people and our focus is on helping them,”
“Please send money. Please don’t go. Don’t send stuff. Just send money,” Rhiannon Giddens said in a social media post. “And think about who we need to be in office to handle these kinds of things. Once in a lifetime weather events are now every other year. [It’s] hard not to see what our actions have reaped and to see the devastation they are leaving in their path for communities that will be rebuilding for years — if they even will be able to. My love goes to all affected by Helene but by itself it’s not too helpful.”
Indigo De Souza wrote on social media that her Asheville home is underwater and that the “community is without basic survival resources. People are losing their homes and lives. Many spaces I’ve known my whole life are destroyed. We will be rebuilding from the ground up and we will need so much support and love. I am feeling so out of control being on tour and unable to reach anyone. North Carolina, you are so special to me. I will stand by you always.”
