North Kitsap School Board approves superintendent's resignation
North Kitsap's school board voted to accept the resignation of superintendent Laurynn Evans during Thursday's regularly scheduled meeting. The resignation will go into effect June 30.
Evans was placed on administrative leave by the board Feb. 8 after she was named as the suspect in a Jan. 26 theft of signs opposing the district's February bond measure. Evans entered into a pretrial diversion agreement Feb. 28 while appearing at Kitsap County District Court over a misdemeanor charge of removing or defacing political advertising.
North Kitsap's board approved Evans' resignation as a consent agenda item Thursday without discussion. The agenda originally noted that Evans' contract, which was set to run through June 30, 2026, would be a discussion item for board members. That topic was removed from the agenda prior to the meeting.
North Kitsap Acting Superintendent Rachel Davenport provided an update on the district's website Thursday night regarding Evans' resignation. Davenport pointed out that she is officially assuming all superintendent duties.
"I understand there may be questions about the board’s vote and Dr. Evans’ departure," Davenport wrote. "Because this is a personnel and legal matter, I ask for your understanding of the District’s decision not to comment further at this time."
It is unknown how long Davenport, the district's executive director of human resources, will serve as acting superintendent. Board president Mike Desmond did not immediately return an email inquiry Friday regarding the subject. Patrick Mace, a software and website support specialist for the district who is currently assisting with public information matters, said the board is reviewing its next steps forward.
"Ms. Davenport's appointment as acting superintendent ensures continuity," Mace said. "The board will keep the community informed as they determine next steps for our schools."
North Kitsap's next board meeting is scheduled for March 21.
