HAMMOND, La. (WGNO) — On Jan. 26, 27-year-old Nicholas Platt was found dead by the Hammond Police Department due to an apparent drug overdose.
In response, the department contacted the Fentanyl Overdose Response Team to assist in the case.
The team responds to overdoses to investigate if there was fentanyl involved.
“This is something that was tried in other states or had happened in other locations, but it’s the first time that it’s happening in Louisiana, and it’s the first time definitely in our region,” Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. said.

Through a series of tests, the response team determined that Platt died of a fentanyl overdose.
When that was discovered, those on the team started looking for the seller.
“I will tell y’all that this type of case has never been prosecuted in the 21st Judicial District,” Bergeron said.
In April, they determined that 26-year-old Trystan McMillion was the man who allegedly sold Platt the drugs. In early August, McMillion was booked on second-degree murder charges.
“Any police department, any chief of police, any sheriff, any anybody in the leadership role is only as good as the people below me. I can’t tell you how proud I am of this whole team and how they’ve come together, how they worked,” Bergeron said.

Due to the work of the team, Patt’s family says they are one step closer to getting justice for their son.
“He was a loving father and son. He had a daughter that he adored dearly. Without their tireless efforts, we would never see justice done,” Nicholas Platt’s father Jay Platt said.
