NY Democrat Chuck Schumer unanimously reelected as Senate majority leader

Sen. Chuck Schumer will serve another term as Senate majority leader after Democrats unanimously reelected the New York lawmaker Thursday morning.

Schumer has served as majority leader since 2021 and now heads into his fifth term as a senator.

Democrats secured their Senate majority in last month's midterm elections, following Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto's win in Nevada.

With Sen. Raphael Warnock winning reelection this week in a Georgia runoff to keep his seat, the party raised their majority to 51-49 from a previous even split, giving Democrats and Schumer more legislative control.

But Schumer will also have to contend with a divided Congress, after the GOP flipped enough seats in the midterms to take back House majority at 221-213.
