NYPD has high-tech strategy to keep West Indian Day festivities safe
NEW YORK (PIX11) — The largest celebration of Caribbean culture in New York City is just a few days away, and to help keep the crowds expected to attend the West Indian, American Caribbean carnival safe, the NYPD is using drones and other technology.
PIX11 News was the only station inside a private meeting where the department outlined its comprehensive plan.
According to Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, drones will be heavily used this year, and with the US Open happening at the same time, the department has its hands full.
“We have a massive parade going on, a lot of people, also a US open, and we also have to provide everyday service for New Yorkers,” Maddrey said.
In the past, J’ouvert, the overnight celebration leading up to the parade, has had its share of gun violence. Maddrey believes that is a thing of the past.
Extra officers, surveillance cameras, and barricades will also help with security measures to keep things running smoothly.
Paradegoers should arrive early and expect bag checks and checkpoints.
