Oakland City Council to vote on putting Thao recall on November ballot

(KRON) — The Oakland City Council will take up a vote Tuesday on whether or not to put the recall of Mayor Sheng Thao on the ballot in November. Organizers of the recall effort, which is backed by the Oakland chapter of the NAACP, announced they had amassed the required number of signatures just days before the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Thao’s Oakland home last month.

On Tuesday, the council will vote on adopting a resolution accepting the certification of the results of the examination of the petition to recall Thao. The resolution would place the recall on the Nov. 5 election ballot and authorize the city clerk to take actions under law to submit it to voters.

After a narrow win that saw her take the mayor’s office by a slim margin of under 700 votes, Mayor Thao has endured a difficult first term. The mayor has faced scrutiny for her firing of former Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, missing the deadline to apply for a federal grant to combat retail crime, the city’s rampant crime rate, and her perceived handling of the Athletics’ proposed move to Las Vegas, among other things.

Since the FBI raid on June 20, recall proponents have increasingly called for Thao to step down. The mayor has given no indication that she will do so. In her first public remarks following the raid, Mayor Thao lashed out at an unnamed group of billionaires and “radical rightwing” elements she implied were working in a coordinated effort to remove her from office.
