Oconee Blotter: Shoplifting suspect flees, crashes on Athens Perimeter
The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:
SUSPECT FLEES: On Aug. 28, Deputy Gregory Harrison was on patrol when he saw a Nissan Maxima traveling east on Atlanta Highway that was driven by a shoplifting suspect. After a traffic stop, the 30-year-old woman provided her license, but the deputy noticed she put the gear in drive and the two passengers quickly exited the car before she drove off. A pursuit, with speeds over 100 mph, proceeded into Clarke County. Deputy Jonathan Strum also responded and after entering the Athens Perimeter he found the car crashed on an embankment. The driver exited and tried to flee, but she was captured by the two deputies. She screamed and struggled with the officers, who called for an ambulance after she was placed in custody. She faces numerous charges stemming from the chase and resistance.
MARIJUANA SEIZED: On Aug. 28, Cpl. Lex Ogan was patrolling on U.S. Highway 78 near Bogart when he stopped a Cadillac XTS due to a faulty brake light. He smelled marijuana on the 43-year Loganville man. A search of the car revealed a blunt in the ashtray and three large bags of marijuana in the trunk. The man, who was convicted previously for distributing marijuana, blamed the drugs on his brother who had previously used the vehicle. The man also failed a sobriety test and was charged with DUI along with other violations.
BRAVES SHIRTS: On Aug. 28, Deputy Annessa Glenn was dispatched to Walmart, where a loss prevention officer had detained a 26-year-old Toccoa woman. She had tried to leave the store without paying for eight Atlanta Braves jerseys valued at $304.

HOSTILE MAN: On Aug. 28, Deputy William Lewis was dispatched about 9:40 p.m. to the Racetrac station on Macon Highway where a man was causing a loud disturbance. The 44-year-old man claimed he was trying to help a woman fix her car when she became upset. An ambulance had stopped and a paramedic saw the man shouting at the store clerk. The medic told the suspect to clam down, but this also angered him. The medic described the man as intoxicated, hostile and unpredictable. The officer placed the man under arrest for disorderly conduct, but he refused to get in the patrol unit. However, after he was put in the unit and taken to jail he somehow unbuckled himself and began walking into the jail without being scanned. He made rude comments toward the deputy during the process.
RECKLESS DRIVER: On Aug. 29, Deputy Annessa Glenn and Cpl. Lex Ogan worked a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 441 that stemmed from the report of a reckless driver who was traveling in the wrong lane of traffic and forced two vehicles off the road. The driver had red, watery eyes and had a strong smell of alcohol. At first, he denied drinking, then confessed to drinking one Modelo beer. The 33-year-old Athens man was charged with DUI.
ATTEMPTED THEFT: On Sept. 1, Cpl. Lex Ogan was dispatched to Westland subdivision at Brookstone Crossing in Bogart, where a 63-year-old Monroe man reported he responded to a Facebook Market ad for construction equipment. The man discovered the seller was not the owner of the equipment. However, he said the seller was trying to scam him out of $19,500. The suspect, a 39-year-old Lithonia man, was later arrested after his vehicle was stopped by police in Conyers. He was charged with attempted felony theft. Inside the suspect’s vehicle, the officer found a Micro Draco gun, a type manufactured in Europe, and a Franklin Armory .223-caliber rifle.
