Ofcom drops investigation into Dan Wootton’s GB News show
Ofcom has dropped an investigation into Dan Wootton’s GB News show.
The journalist, 40, who left the channel in March this year to set up his own independent platform, was accused of using an online pseudonym to offer thousands of pounds to colleagues in exchange for explicit material.
In an episode of his show Dan Wootton Tonight on July 18 last year, he said claims he used a pseudonym and offered colleagues money for sexual material were “simply untrue”.
He added he had made “errors of judgment in the past”, but denied “criminal allegations”.
The regulator was investigating the episode under fairness and privacy regulations, but has now ended the inquiry.
A statement from the regulator said: “We discontinued a fairness and privacy complaint about this programme.
“In line with our published procedures given the nature of fairness and privacy cases, we will not be commenting further.”
Met also closed investigation
In February the Metropolitan Police closed its investigation into Wootton.
The force said that it had been contacted in June 2023 with allegations of sexual offences committed by a man in his 40s.
A spokesman said: “Officers assessed all information available to establish whether any criminal offence has taken place.
“An investigation was commenced into these allegations. All parties involved have now been advised that no further action will be taken. There were no arrests during the investigation.”
Wootton left GB News after Ofcom found comments made on his show by Laurence Fox about a female journalist broke broadcasting rules.
Actor-turned-politician Fox had asked “who would want to shag that?” when speaking about Ava Evans during an episode of Dan Wootton Tonight on Sept 26 last year.
Neither Fox nor Wootton said sorry while on air after the comments were made, but they did subsequently offer apologies.
